What can I expect during the free initial consultation?
The process starts with a free initial 30-minute consultation where we get to know each other better. It is an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have and to share information about the issues that you’re struggling with.
At the end of the consultation, if there is a good fit, I will outline the ways I would be able to assist you. If we would like to work together, then we can proceed to book a first session.
Telephone consultations can be booked online and in person consultations can be booked through me directly (please phone or email).
How many sessions will it take?
The length and frequency of sessions depends on the nature of your issue, what you’re looking for and financial considerations. We collaboratively work on a plan that suits your needs.
The majority of clients come in on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to address specific issues. Clients normally come in more frequently at the beginning of therapy and then lessen the frequency as they work through their problems. This can range anywhere from 3 – 12 sessions.
There are clients who come in for long term counselling who are often struggling with more complicated concerns as well as clients who prefer short term, solution focused therapy.
What Can I expect during sessions?
Our first session together will include some assessment questions so that I can get a sense your overall health and wellbeing. You will be encouraged to start opening up about your struggles in a safe and collaborative environment.
Following sessions are often focused on talking about your issue(s) in more depth, sharing your thoughts and feelings and learning tools and strategies that are tailored to your specific concerns. I encourage clients to provide feedback about their sessions.
Are the sessions confidential?
All sessions are kept confidential unless you provide written consent for me to share your information with a third party. There are some exceptions to this rule as required by law which are listed below:
If there is a risk of you harming yourself or others
If there is reasonable suspicion that a child (18 or under), elderly person, or vulnerable person is being abused or neglected
If there is a court order or subpoena to release clinical information
Are the sessions covered by insurance?
Receipts are issued after each session with my license information. If you have extended health benefits, then you may be able to submit receipts for reimbursement through your insurance provider. Many insurance companies in BC recognize the designation of Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), however all policies vary.
Please note that it is your responsibility to contact your extended health provider through your work or Human Resources Department to find out if you are covered to see a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and to find out how much is covered per year.
Do you accept third party referrals or coverage?
If you have coverage through a third-party agency, please contact me directly for more information as this can often be arranged. The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), Work Safe BC (WSBC), and the Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) are normally billed directly for authorized counselling treatments.
